Water supply from the municipal main or a well, distribution through the house, and the drain-waste-vent system carrying it away. Plus the water heater, and — in a lot of Ontario housing stock — a backwater valve and sump arrangement that determines how the house handles heavy rain.
Can you do your own plumbing work in Ontario?
Partly. Minor fixture work is generally homeowner territory. Drain, waste, and vent work, fixture relocation, and anything that will be inspected under the plumbing sections of the Building Code should go to a licensed plumber and may need a permit.

The consequence of getting drainage and venting wrong is not a leak — it is sewer gas, or a system that siphons traps dry. This is a poor area for improvisation.

How long it lasts
Copper supply lines often 50+ years; older galvanized steel much less and usually overdue. Tank water heaters 8–12 years. Cast iron drains vary widely and can fail invisibly from the inside.
What failure looks like
- Falling water pressure across multiple fixtures
- Discoloured water, particularly after the supply has been off
- Slow drains in more than one place at once, suggesting a main line issue
- Damp or staining on basement walls after heavy rain
- A water heater past its badge date, or showing rust at the base
Worth knowing about your own house
- Is there a backwater valve, and has it ever been serviced?
- What is the supply pipe material, and is any of it galvanized?
- How old is the water heater, and is it owned or rented?
